A Guide to New York’s New Debt Collection Laws

Debt collection laws in New York have changed significantly in recent years. The changes are designed to protect consumers from unfair and aggressive debt collection practices.

Here’s a guide to the new debt collection laws in New York:

Debt collectors are now prohibited from contacting a debtor before 8:00 am or after 9:00 pm. They are also prohibited from contacting a debtor at work if the debtor has asked them not to.

Debt collectors are required to send written notice to the debtor within 5 days of their first contact. The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor, and information about the debtor’s right to dispute the debt.
