Can I Change My Mortgage Loan Servicer?

While you generally can't shop around for a mortgage loan servicer the way you can for other services, you might be able to switch loan servicers if you refinance your mortgage. Here's what you need to know about changing mortgage loan servicers.

When you get a mortgage, the lender who provides the loan sells it to an investor, such as Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. The investor then hires a company, called a loan servicer, to collect your payments and handle customer service for the life of the loan.

You don't have a say in who services your loan, but you might be able to switch servicers if you refinance. Some lenders will let you choose your servicer when you apply for a refinanced loan. Others might automatically assign you to their in-house servicing operation.
