Debt Collector Calling Family Members? Know Your Rights.
If you have debt, chances are you've received calls from debt collectors. But what if they start calling your family members? Can they do that?
It's important to know your rights when it comes to debt collectors. According to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, debt collectors are not allowed to call your family members or friends to try and collect a debt. They can, however, call your spouse or co-signer.
If a debt collector does call your family member, they must identify themselves and tell you that they're trying to collect a debt. They're not allowed to threaten or harass you or your family member. And they're not allowed to give false information about you or the debt.
If a debt collector is violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, you can file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
