What is a Bankruptcy Discharge?

A bankruptcy discharge is a court order that releases a debtor from liability for certain debts. The discharge is typically granted after the debtor has completed all required payments under a bankruptcy plan.

A bankruptcy discharge may also be granted if the debtor has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and is not liable for any of the debts that would be discharged in a Chapter 7 liquidation.

A debtor who receives a discharge is no longer legally obligated to repay the discharged debts. creditors cannot take any action to collect on discharged debts, such as wage garnishment or collection calls.
