What to Do if You’re Contacted About a Time-Barred Debt

If you're contacted about a time-barred debt, don't panic. There are a few things you can do to protect yourself and your finances.

First, find out if the debt is actually time-barred. You can do this by looking at the date of the last payment or activity on the account. If it's been more than six years since that date, the debt is likely time-barred.

Second, even if the debt is time-barred, you may still want to try to negotiate with the creditor. They may be willing to accept a lower payment or set up a payment plan.

Third, if you're unable to negotiate with the creditor, you can simply ignore the debt. The creditor may still try to collect, but they can't take any legal action against you because the debt is time-barred.
