What to Do if You’re Contacted About a Time-Barred Debt

If you're contacted about a time-barred debt, don't panic. There are a few things you can do to protect yourself.

First, find out if the debt is actually time-barred. You can do this by requesting a validation notice from the creditor. This notice will tell you the date of last activity on the account, as well as the original date of the debt. If the debt is more than six years old, it's likely time-barred.

Once you've confirmed that the debt is indeed time-barred, you have a few options. You can request that the creditor stop contacting you about the debt. You can also negotiate with the creditor to settle the debt for less than what's owed. Or, you can simply ignore the debt and hope that the creditor doesn't take any further action.
