When Can Debt Collectors Call?

When it comes to debt collectors, many people don't know when they can call, or even if they are allowed to call. It's important to understand what the law says about debt collector communication and when debt collectors can contact you.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) is a federal law that outlines how and when a debt collector may legally contact you. Generally speaking, the FDCPA allows for a debt collector to contact you between the hours of 8 am and 9 pm in your local time zone. Additionally, a debtor cannot be contacted at an inconvenient place or time—such as their workplace—unless they have given prior consent. A debt collector may also not contact you on legal holidays or Sundays unless first agreed upon with the debtor.
