When To Stop Using Credit Cards Before Filing Chapter 7

Before filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, it's essential to know when to stop using credit cards. It’s important to be aware of the rules and regulations that come with filing for bankruptcy in order to protect yourself from further financial hardship.

If you’re considering filing Chapter 7, it’s important to stop charging your credit cards immediately. If a debtor charges more than $600 on one or more credit cards within 90 days of filing Chapter 7, those debts may not be discharged under the bankruptcy proceedings. Additionally, any debt incurred after filing is not eligible for discharge either. This could leave you with large amounts of debt even after the bankruptcy has been finalized. Therefore, it is best practice to completely stop using your credit cards at least three months before filing in order avoid this issue and maintain financial stability moving forward.
