Bankruptcy Court - A Definition

Bankruptcy Court is a specialized court of the United States that deals specifically with matters related to bankruptcy cases. The Bankruptcy Code, part of Title 11 of the United States Code, governs how individuals and businesses can go about filing for bankruptcy in federal courts. Bankruptcy Courts are judicial bodies established by Congress to administer bankruptcy proceedings and handle all related matters. These courts are located in each state, as well as in the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico.

The jurisdiction of Bankruptcy Courts is limited to matters arising under Title 11 of the United States Code or any other law relating to bankruptcy. This includes not only individual bankruptcies but also corporate ones; therefore, these specialized courts handle all types of bankruptcy cases filed in their jurisdictions.
