In 2015, the Wayne County Treasurer's Office initiated tax foreclosure proceedings on more than 30,000 properties. As a result of these foreclosures, over 2,000 families lost their homes.
Tax foreclosure is a legal process in which the government seizes and sells a property to satisfy unpaid taxes. The process begins when the owner fails to pay their property taxes. The county then issues a tax lien, which gives the government a legal claim to the property. If the owner does not pay off the debt within a certain period of time, usually two years, the county can initiate foreclosure proceedings.
Foreclosure is a lengthy and costly process, both for the government and for the property owner. In many cases, it can take years for a property to be finally sold at auction.
