How IRS Wage Garnishments Work

If you owe the IRS money, one way they may collect is through wage garnishment. This is when the IRS contacts your employer and instructs them to withhold a certain amount of your paycheck to go towards your tax debt. The amount withheld depends on how much you owe, but it cannot exceed 25% of your disposable income.

If you are subject to wage garnishment, you will receive a notice from the IRS informing you of the amount that will be withheld from your paycheck. Your employer will also be notified and given instructions on how to withhold the money. Once the money is withheld, it will be sent to the IRS to go towards paying down your tax debt.

Wage garnishment can be a difficult situation to deal with, as it can make it hard to pay your other bills and meet your financial obligations.
