Will my family, who I live with for free, learn about my bankruptcy?

It's a common question: if you file for bankruptcy, will your family members find out? The answer is maybe. If you live with family members and don't pay rent, the bankruptcy court may require that you disclose your bankruptcy to them.

This is because one of the requirements for filing for bankruptcy is that you must list all of your creditors - including anyone to whom you owe money. If you don't list a creditor, the court may view it as fraud and dismiss your bankruptcy case entirely.

So, if you're thinking about filing for bankruptcy and you live with family members who don't charge you rent, it's important to have a conversation with them beforehand. Explain the situation and let them know that they may be listed as a creditor in your bankruptcy case.

Of course, every family is different and some may be more understanding than others.
