Growing up in a violent home may lead a child to become influenced to use similar strategies. Traumatic stress may have blocked the child from achieving important developmental milestones. By the time the child has reached adolescence, he may be abusing substances or engaging in other reckless or criminal behavior. So the issue is more complex than treating a younger child – you’ve got to treat not only the exposure to violence but all the mal-adaptations the child has developed to cope. You’ve got to help the adolescent return to a healthy developmental path.
